There is a radical shift taking place in the world of gaming thanks to cryptocurrency and Web3 technologies, and challenging traditional top-down, centralized Web2 gaming models is a growing trend.

Web3 gaming eliminates intermediaries and transforms how developers and players engage in games. With the advent of digital collectibles, the industry can now use this medium to engage fans. Web3 is paving the way for a new type of fandom — a composable one. The idea is that Web3 allows for more interactive, robust, and flexible communication between fans and their favorite players or eSports teams, as well as brands.

A fundamental aim of web3 gaming is to provide players with more control, compensate them for the value they add, and make gaming more accessible to everyone rather than just the top 0.1% who earn their living playing games. However, there are still some elements missing from the web3 gaming industry.

As a matter of fact, many traditional gamers still find it hard to be engaged with decentralized games, and not without reason. While it is convenient to conclude that most traditional gamers today are “against web3,” what gamers detest is the erosion of their enjoyment of online gaming and the impression that their whole online experience is constructed to profit someone else.

Web3 X Gaming — What’s Missing?

As a result of an unbalanced economic system, Web3 software developers seem to be more interested in profit than gameplay, not to mention the diversity of the games they develop. Their main topic of discussion often revolves around trending games that could be profitable. In light of the narrow scope of game discussion, traditional gamers may feel like they are missing out on some great games.

Today’s Web3 games seem to lack the fun players normally associate with games when compared to their traditional counterparts. Most of today’s play-to-earn (P2E) games require players to stick with the game for hours at a time while grinding monotonous, soul-sucking tasks to win rewards. At their best, the majority of P2E games of today are merely DeFi games adorned with unique graphics and adorable characters.

Furthermore, traditional gamers tend to view non-fungible tokens (NFTs) with skepticism. They gorge on expensive monkeys and are wary of large game companies using NFTs to further monetize, and who can blame them?

It is clear that today’s widely used play-to-earn model focuses excessively on revenue and not enough on gameplay.

At the end of the day, most gamers don’t want to earn a living playing their favorite games, but they would like gaming ecosystems to generate a greater amount of value for their communities. The point here is not that video games need to have a “greater purpose” besides entertainment, just that making money should not be the primary objective — regardless of crypto assets’ inclusion.

In-game revenue generation has greatly benefited game publishers’ income statements, and it is financially beneficial for developers to target players who are willing to pay for in-game incentives. But there is also a significant proportion of players who prefer a “min-max” gameplay style.

Because so many web3 games are nothing more than dressed-up DeFi protocols, their assets’ value fluctuates along with the overall crypto market. This stands in stark contrast with traditional gaming, exemplary of recession-resistant spending, and anticyclical in nature since consumers have proven that they are willing to cut other forms of discretionary spending to spend on games.

By enhancing the user experience, web3 games — whose user base has been mainly crypto enthusiasts so far — will become more relevant to the ‘traditional’ community of gamers, which should result in more conversions and popularity.

Devising The Right Web3 Gaming Strategy — DeFi Games Can Be Fun Too

In the past, web3 gaming has largely been dominated by a small collection of prototypes that have captured the attention of a relatively small percentage of the gaming community at large. While investment and innovation are flooding the space, the lion’s share of web3 “gamers” are crypto holders who regard today’s games as just another method of earning money, not as a means of entertainment. Ajuna is here to change that.
